Finding Your Brand Purpose
A Brand Purpose is your business's "Why", the core reason your company exists (beyond making money). Building your Brand around a greater purpose, gives it deeper meaning for you and your customers.

We’ve all seen generic corporate mission statements slapped on a plaque to decorate a stuffy boardroom or waiting area. They use about fifty words and cause readers to get mind-numbingly bored, sleepy and possibly get a migraine if they actually do try to figure out what is being said. They talk about "maximizing stakeholder value through synergistic paradigms." It’s dry, it’s soulless, and nobody cares, not your team, and definitely not your potential customers.
Now envision the opposite. A company whose core purpose is stated proudly for all to see, read and experience. Engrained in the very foundation of how the company was built and how it communicates, the purpose is the company’s driver behind all of its key decisions. The company is clear in its intent, values, reason for being and its impact.
It doesn’t take much to reason that a company with a purpose has a better chance to resonate with its audience, and therefore a better chance for survival. This is true only as long as the need / reason continues to exist to drive the purpose and as long as the company continues to make a difference or positive change.
When you write copy for your Brand that has no purpose, your marketing feels soulless and hollow. You end up competing purely on offers or price alone, which is a competitive race to the bottom. In a marketplace where consumers have what feels like infinite choices, trying to win without having a clear purpose is self-sabotage.
Benefits:
From a strategic perspective, defining your purpose is a massive cost-cutter and a powerful differentiator. When an SMB aligns its operations with a genuine purpose: like bringing green, eco-friendly packaging to local retail or making technical software accessible to non-tech savvy founders—something incredible happens to your bottom line.
First, it slashes your customer acquisition costs. Modern consumers, especially those looking to support businesses that protect the planet, aren’t just buying a product; they are buying into a shared belief of a better future. Second, it aligns your internal teams. When your people know why they are rolling up their sleeves every morning, with a belief in having a greater impact, efficiency skyrockets, and turnover drops. Your purpose acts as a strategic filter: if an idea doesn't serve the core mission, it gets tossed out before it wastes your capital.
How To Clarify Your Purpose:
Let’s get to the point of how to make your Brand Purpose clear. Simply put, it is your business's "Why". The core reason your company exists (beyond making money).
Ask Yourself: If your business closed its doors forever tomorrow, what would the world actually miss? What was the greater problem that your business helped solve?
Did your business have a positive impact on the lives of the people that supported it through its contributions?
Money is the oxygen that keeps the business alive, but your purpose is the reason the business wants to stay breathing. Once in place, your Purpose will guide how you show up in your community every single day.
The Actionable Tool
Let’s skip the boring corporate theory and build your Lean Purpose Matrix. Grab a coffee, pull out a notepad, and fill in these three vertical, actionable cards to find your brand's true north:
Task 1: The Core Friction (What problem makes you want to act?)
The Focus: Look at your industry. What is a common practice, a broken system, or issue that frustrates you?
Note: Understanding this, helps identify specific problem areas your business may be uniquely equipped to solve or improve.
Task 2: The Human Impact (Who are you fighting for?)
The Focus: Identify the exact group of people, founders, or local communities whose lives get easier because your business exists.
Note: Avoid vague generalities like "we help everyone." Get fiercely specific about the exact human connection you are making.
